Just Drift Federal Cup, round 3
Monday, September 1, 2008
Oval = power = oval. And my car lacks some of it compared to its weight.

Before the third round of Top Drift Federal Cup I felt it was time to really go out and get into some good tandem heats. Unfortunately, for the first time, I had to face the fact that my car was REALLY not up to the task. Too much traction and the little bit of banking made it too tough for the engine to keep the wheels spinning.

Nevertheless, I qualified into top 16 by using the dirty outside of the big oval turn as a traction remover. This line kept my wheels spinning, I dirt dropped a wheel while maintaining a smooth line all the way into the infield, and the rest was easy 2nd gear drift. I actually got a pretty good score considering the final results (see JustDrift.com for complete points standings).

For top 8 the dirty outside was brushed off by all the top 16 cars staying on the tarmac most of the time and the engine choked on power. I just barely saved it with the e-brake but was off the outer clipping zone by several feet. My second attempt I went for it big time to hit the narrow streak of dirt on the outside, but I had entered with a bit tooo much speed and the grip wasn't enough to keep all wheels on the track - I ended up dropping two wheels which is equal to 0 points.

The top 8, top 4 and final rounds were really nice to watch. It was CLOSE between Forrest Wang and Ron Freitas, but evetually Forrest Wang won it and also had top scores, with Cody Parkhouse and Jeff Jonas taking 2nd and 3rd.

On my end, I am happy that after about 6 months I've picked up a lot of drifting techniques so that I can now "drive my heart out", which just looks better than staying a bit conservative and "professional". Now I am looking forward to continue practicing high-speed drifting, hopefully in a high hp car with a lot of steer-angle.

In the Top Drift Federal Cup standings I am now in 8th position, which I consider really nice. There are several really talented drivers there and I have a shot to climb even higher at the last round of 2008, on Oct 26.

Pics can be seen at www.citytireonline.com , who also sponsored my tires for this event - great big thanks for this!

See ya soon! /Carl
